Halliwell Property Agents is a locally owned family real estate business that has been servicing the North West Coast of Tasmania for over 90 years. The business began with Mr. Arch Day in the 1920’s when he decided to start selling farms instead of working on them. From there the business grew and became known by all as A.C. Day & Son.
In 1960 Alan Halliwell Snr. And his son Don Halliwell bought into the business. Don moved from Launceston and his job in real estate at Richards & Woolcock to work at A.C. Day & Son. Soon after the business name changed to A.C. Day & Halliwell.
In the early 1970’s Don Halliwell took over the entire business and became the sole director of the company changing the name to Day & Halliwell Pty Ltd. In those days the company colours were yellow and black. An original sign is framed and on display in our office today recognising our history. It’s quite interesting to see what real estate signs used to look like back in those days so next time you’re in our office take a look.
On the 1st October 1982 Don Halliwell joined the First National group. With this came another name alteration but also a colour change. Day & Halliwell First National adopted the colours red, white and blue. Don was part of the first group of agents in Australia to join First National. In fact, he was probably the very first agent to join in Tasmania.
In 2006 Alan Halliwell Jnr. Joined his father Don Halliwell in the business and the name changed to Halliwell First National. Then in 2009 after 27 years the business ended its association with First National and became an independent business known as Halliwell Property Agents and retained the familiar red, white and blue colours.
This business has seen great change and has changed with the community. We were the first agents to have two-way radio in our sales people’s cars in the 1980’s. We have watched 13 different Melbourne to Devonport ferries sail up the Mersey River. We were selling real estate when the streets in Devonport were still dirt and horse and cart rode on them. We were the first agency to use professional photography. We were here to watch our brave local men depart for war in 1939 and welcomed their return as heroes. We watched our champion Darryl Baldock win a flag with the Saints in 1966. We have proudly supported dozens of local charities over the decades and we have witnessed generations of families come through our doors to do business because mum or dad or grandparents recommended us.
Alan Halliwell hopes to pass this legacy on to his children so that future generations of Devonport families can have a truly local agent they can trust to do the job right and that they know has the local community at heart.
Thank You North West Tasmania
